How touch typing helps you code better
Programming is mostly thinking, not typing. But every glance at the keyboard and every hunt for a bracket pulls you out of the problem. Touch typing removes that friction, so the code goes from your head to the screen without interruptions.
1. Your eyes stay on the code
When you don’t look down, you see what your editor is doing as you type: autocomplete suggestions, highlighted errors, matching brackets. You catch a wrong name the moment you type it instead of when the build fails.
2. Symbols stop being speed bumps
Code uses far more symbols than ordinary writing: brackets, parentheses, semicolons, quotes, equals signs and operators on almost every line. Many self-taught typists slow right down at these keys. With touch typing each symbol has a fixed finger, just like a letter:
- {right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- }right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- [right pinky
- ]right pinky
- (right ring finger + Shift (left pinky)
- )right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- <right middle finger + Shift (left pinky)
- >right ring finger + Shift (left pinky)
- =right pinky
- +right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- -right pinky
- _right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- ;right pinky
- :right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- 'right pinky
- "right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- /right pinky
- \right pinky
- |right pinky + Shift (left pinky)
- &right index finger + Shift (left pinky)
- *right middle finger + Shift (left pinky)
- !left pinky + Shift (right pinky)
- #left middle finger + Shift (right pinky)
- $left index finger + Shift (right pinky)
- `left pinky
- ~left pinky + Shift (right pinky)
3. Fewer typos to debug
A misspelled variable, a missing closing bracket or a stray character can cost minutes of searching. Typing accurately, without looking, means fewer of these small mistakes in the first place. In code, accuracy matters more than raw speed.
4. Shortcuts become second nature
Editors and terminals are built around keyboard shortcuts. When your hands stay on the home row, keys like Ctrl, Shift, Alt and Tab are a short reach for your little fingers and thumbs, so shortcuts become one quick movement rather than a search.
5. Much of the job is writing
Commit messages, code reviews, documentation, comments, tickets, chat and emails: a large part of a developer’s day is ordinary writing. Typing it quickly and without effort leaves more time and energy for the code itself.
What it won’t do
Touch typing won’t make you think faster or design better software. What it does is take typing out of the way, so nothing interrupts your thinking.
How to start
- Learn the home position with the finger placement guide and the first lessons.
- Practise brackets and symbols with code practice: real one-line snippets in JavaScript, Python, CSS, HTML and SQL.
- Keep your accuracy at 95% or above before pushing speed, especially on symbols.
- Check your progress once a week with the 1-minute typing test.
