About Type

Type is a free touch-typing tutor built around one idea: you type faster and more accurately when every key has a finger, and you can see which one.

How lessons work

The course starts with your home position and adds a few keys at a time across 12 stages and 32 lessons. On screen you see a keyboard coloured by finger, a pair of hands with the right finger lit up, and a short instruction such as “Use your left index finger”. The finger placement guide shows the whole map on one page. Every lesson is open, so you can start anywhere and come back any time. A lesson gets its completed tick when you reach the accuracy target (90% by default, adjustable in Settings).

Other ways to practise

  • Daily challenge – the same three sentences for everyone each day, with a result you can share.
  • 1-minute typing test – common words for 60 seconds to find your current speed.
  • Paragraph practice – type a full passage with capitals and punctuation.
  • Timed tests – type as much as you can in 15, 30 or 60 seconds.
  • Weak-key practice – exercises built from the keys you miss most, using only keys you have learned.

What we measure

  • WPM – correct characters on screen divided by five, divided by minutes spent typing (pauses don’t count).
  • Accuracy – correct keystrokes divided by all keystrokes. A wrong character is shown in red and you fix it with Backspace, but the mistake stays counted, so correcting errors can’t raise your accuracy. Backspace itself isn’t counted.
  • Weak keys – keys you miss often, used to build targeted practice from keys you’ve already learned.

Honest expectations

Many learners find that short, regular practice works better than occasional long sessions, but results vary and Type can’t promise any particular speed or outcome. Slow, accurate typing comes first; speed follows.
